But greater production capacity doesn’t automatically produce greater value, making taste and independent judgment increasingly important. AI can make creative decisions, too, which means we need to develop the expertise to evaluate its recommendations rather than automatically accepting them. For individuals and businesses, knowing what deserves to be made, and when to exercise restraint, may become as important as knowing how to make it.

Video was created using Visla

What is taste, exactly?

Taste is our ability to distinguish what we find good, interesting, or worthwhile from what we don’t. But there’s more to it than simply having preferences.

In the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy, philosopher Ted Cohen identifies several understandings of artistic taste. These include our capacity to enjoy artistic works, recognize their constituent elements, and discern aesthetic qualities such as elegance or gracefulness.

Consider two people who enjoy the same film. One might simply love it, while the other can explain how its editing, cinematography, and performances contribute to the experience. Neither has to enjoy it more than the other, but their ability to evaluate the work differs.

Taste also helps us evaluate work in context. A beautiful, elaborate video might be completely inappropriate for a customer who just needs to learn how to reset their password. Recognizing that is itself an exercise of judgment.

How do you develop taste when AI makes it easier to skip the learning process?

Ira Glass, the creator and host of This American Life, once described the frustrating gap between having good taste and producing work that meets your own standards.

In his interview about storytelling, Glass observed that beginners often recognize the shortcomings in their work before developing the technical skills to fix them. His advice was to keep making things. Repeated practice eventually helps close that gap.

AI complicates this process. Someone learning video editing could generate a draft, examine its pacing, question the footage choices, experiment with alternatives, and gradually understand why certain decisions work. Alternatively, they could generate twenty videos and accept every initial result.

Both people end up with finished videos, but only one has spent much time understanding the decisions behind them.

AI can be a useful teacher, particularly when you’re experimenting with unfamiliar techniques. However, consistently outsourcing difficult decisions could mean missing opportunities to develop the expertise required to make them yourself.

AI can make creative decisions. You still need to think critically.

Modern AI can critique writing, recommend visual compositions, and identify problems people overlook. Sometimes its recommendations are genuinely better than ours.

Imagine you’re creating an employee training video. AI recommends shortening the introduction because it seems repetitive. However, you know from previous training sessions that new employees consistently misunderstand a particular concept, and the introduction deliberately addresses that confusion.

You have a good reason to reject the recommendation. In another situation, AI might identify unnecessary exposition that you’ve become too attached to. You should be willing to accept that criticism, too.

A 2025 Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon study surveyed 319 knowledge workers and found that greater confidence in generative AI was associated with less reported critical-thinking activity.

The study relied on self-reported experiences, so it doesn’t establish that AI makes people less intelligent or causes long-term cognitive decline. Still, we need to think critically about what we’re doing, especially when accepting an automated recommendation feels easier than examining it.

What makes AI-generated content distinctive?

AI has made many technical aspects of creative production more accessible. Someone with little video editing experience can now use Visla’s AI Video Agent to assemble footage, narration, subtitles, and other elements into an editable video.

Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 5.5 release is another example of how quickly AI production capabilities are improving. According to Anthropic, the model generates output more than 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and costs up to 30% less per task in its testing.

OpenAI makes a similar case for GPT‑6.1 Sol. According to OpenAI, the model nearly matches GPT‑6 Astra on agentic coding, computer use, and professional work while costing one-fifth as much for standard API input and output tokens.

As more people gain access to similar capabilities, the creative decisions surrounding production become increasingly relevant to differentiation.

In a 2024 study published in Science Advances, researchers found that AI-assisted participants produced short stories that readers rated more favorably, particularly among participants with lower initial creativity scores. However, those stories also became more similar to one another.

The experiment concerned short fiction, but it illustrates a potential problem with relying on similar generative tools and recommendations.

Consider a restaurant owner generating an AI menu board. The result might look attractive, but the owner still needs to consider the restaurant’s concept, its customers, and what information will help them order.

A busy lunch spot might benefit from large prices and clearly displayed meal combinations. A restaurant serving unfamiliar dishes might need more space to explain ingredients. Simply accepting an attractive template could overlook what customers actually need.

And no, the solution isn’t necessarily writing increasingly elaborate prompts. The restaurant’s own identity and knowledge of its customers should inform the process.

Faster content production still needs organizational discipline

Suppose AI reduces the time required to create a training video from two days to two hours. That’s a substantial improvement, but should the organization use all those saved hours to produce more training videos?

Someone still needs to determine what employees should learn, verify the information, distribute the material, and evaluate whether the training works.

Google’s 2025 DORA research found that AI amplifies existing organizational strengths and weaknesses in software development. Faster code generation makes the systems surrounding that work, including testing and coordination, particularly consequential.

The same concern applies to content production. A marketing team can automate blog drafts, social posts, campaign assets, and video creation. But without a clear strategy, editorial standards, documented workflows, and a way to measure results, it could end up producing considerably more work without addressing its customers’ needs.

There’s also the work that follows publication. Someone needs to update outdated information, maintain webpages, review generated claims, and manage an expanding content library. Those responsibilities consume time regardless of how quickly the original material was generated.

Just because we can create more with AI, should we?

Sometimes, absolutely. AI makes previously unaffordable projects possible and helps businesses produce material for audiences they couldn’t previously serve.

But before generating another video, blog post, or campaign, it’s worth asking a few questions: Who needs this? What problem are we solving? How will we know whether it worked?

The internet isn’t short on content. If we can’t answer those questions, perhaps that next piece can stay in the drafts folder.

Quick answer: AI content creation makes it easier than ever to produce videos, articles, designs, software, and other creative work.
